Medium Storage
It is intended for data that is most actively worked with. You can mount the storage on your computer as an additional disk. You then work with documents like any other drive - you open them, edit them, and save them.
Medium storage is also suitable for storing large files, such as videos or extensive measurement data. It is designed to store data up to units or tens of terabytes in size.
Storage Properties
Parameters
- Capacity: Storage capacity depends on the on the workplace's needs and the technical capabilities of the available storage resources. However, it is also possible to work with volumes of terabytes.
- Data sharing: The storage administrator sets sharing on request according to the specific needs of the workplace. It is also possible to create quite complicated structures of access rights.
Sharing does not occur in real time, it is necessary for one employee to save and close the document before another employee can open and edit it. Only one user can edit a document at a time, simultaneous editing is not possible. - Access: You can access the storage from any computer in the MU network, including the WiFi networks Eduroam and MUNI. From other networks (e.g., from home or during a business trip), you need to connect to the storage via SFTP or VPN.
- Availability: The storage is built so that there is a risk of a minimum of outages. If an outage occurs, we try to resolve it as soon as possible.
- Backup: Data is backed up every day every hour. All backups except the last one are deleted with the start of the new day. Backup data is stored for 30 days. If you delete an important file, you can restore it on demand. To restore data, write to the e-mail: storage@ics.muni.cz and indicate the path where the given file was located and the time from which you want to restore it.
Folders Structure and Sharing Options
The storage is always connected as a whole disk. You can find Instructions for connecting to individual OSes below.
The following folders are available to the user on the mounted disk:
- My Documents – the personal folder of each employee for personal and scientific data. No one else has access to this folder. The only exception is the :\000000-My Documents\Shared subfolder = the folder containing shared folders (explained further).
- Archive – this folder is intended for archive data. This folder is not automatically available to all users; it is set upon request.
- Department number + name – folders for shared documents within individual workplaces. The MU organizational structure defines the structure of these folders. Folders are always automatically accessible to every employee belonging to the given workplace, without exception.
- Sharedfolders "foldername" – these are shared folders within the given group of people. (For example, for projects where there are people from different departments.
Folders are managed by groups of members. Either the folder manager handles access themselves, or they can ask the storage administrators to grant or deny access to someone. To set up a brand-new shared folder, we will prepare the folder and group for you in advance. You need to email: storage@ics.muni.cz.
(Groups of members can be managed by automatic rules in the IS or Perun, depending on specific needs. After consultation with the storage administrators, we will determine the suitable solution for you.)
Note: This network storage is officially called ha-bay (ha-bay.ics.muni.cz).
At various workplaces, you may encounter its aliases, the most commonly used ones are: COPY – at the Campus and CEITEC, disk O / Óčko – at LF and FSpS, disk R – at FF, also fnusa server, Loschmidt server, disk REKNOS, LORD server, and so on.
How to Establish a Storage?
Access to the storage is set up upon request. The storage administrator prepares disk space for the user group. MU employees, students and external workers upon an agreement with MU can request the establishment of access to storage via a form where it is necessary to describe the nature of the data, their volume, and method of work. The storage administrator will then set up a user account or recommend a more technically appropriate way to store the data according to the specific situation.
