Instructions: Adding a Security Key

Before adding a security key (WebAuthn), check if you 1) already have at least one authentication code (TOTP) registered; and 2) a physical security key (so-called "key fob") or a device with a security key function – see an overview of operating systems.

1
Ensure that you have at least one device with a security key function or a physical security key. You can verify the support for security key functions on this device using the test page.

If your device is compatible, you can contiue with the instructions.

You can use an authentication app; a password manager that supports the authentication function; or add it to Windows Hello. Detailed information about supported services can be found here.

2
Open the authentication management interface at mfa.id.muni.cz.

3
Ensure that you have at least one authentication code (TOTP) method registered and have generated backup codes.

4
Click the  Add token button.

5
Select security key as the type and fill in the description (e.g. the manufacturer of the key or the phone model). The description serves only for naming your token.

Continue with the Continue button.

6
A dialog box from your browser or operating system will appear, prompting for confirmation.

If using a mobile phone: Scan the QR code and confirm using biometrics. If using a physical key, press the button on the device. Otherwise perform the appropriate action depending on your device type.

7
If the registration was successful, a message will appear indicating that the token has been added.

You can add as many additional security keys as you like. We strongly recommend registering at least two devices.

You are running an old browser version. We recommend updating your browser to its latest version.
