Special Faculty VPN Servers
Warning
On 1 August 2024, the preferred method of VPN connection from home to the Masaryk University network will change. The new connection will be made through the eduVPN interface, which can be done simply via an app or a newly generated configuration file. Instructions on how to connect both ways can be found on the main eduVPN service page.
The VPN connection method you have been using will continue to work until 29 November 2024.
The service of a virtual private VPN MU has been expanded by the possibility of setting up so-called faculty VPN servers. In this case, the university provides a VPN server dedicated only to employees and students of one faculty (or another workplace). This functionality is primarily used to access licensed sources that are not acquired for the entire MU, but only for some faculty or department. Currently, this service is run for the following workplaces and groups:
Server | Configuration file | Additional information |
|
MU employees | vpn-zam.ics.muni.cz | muni-zam-windows.ovpn muni-zam-split-windows.ovpn 3) muni-zam-linux.ovpn muni-zam-split- linux.ovpn 3) |
Only for employees and explicitly listed users |
Static addresses | vpn-static.ics.muni.cz | muni-static-windows.ovpn muni-static-split-windows.ovpn 3) muni-static-linux.ovpn muni-static-split-linux.ovpn 3) 4) |
Not intended for students; the user always has the same public address 1) |
Faculty of Science | vpn-sci.ics.muni.cz | muni-sci-windows.ovpn muni-sci-linux.ovpn |
|
Faculty of Law | vpn-law.ics.muni.cz | muni-law-windows.ovpn muni-law-linux.ovpn |
For the Faculty of Law employees and students |
VPN via https | vpn-https.ics.muni.cz | muni-https-windows.ovpn muni-https-windows-split.ovpn 3) muni-https-linux.ovpn muni-https-linux-split.ovpn 3) 4) |
For connection from a limited network that does not allow connection to a classic VPN 2) |
1) This server is NOT designed for students! If you have been assigned a static VPN address, you MUST always use the vpn-static.ics.muni.cz server instead of the main VPN, otherwise the connection may not work. Network mask 255.255.255.0. The faculty servers can be used as needed.
2) Using VPN on this port can be considered a violation of the security policy in the respective network! The server is only for a temporary solution if the primary VPN server cannot be used. The server has only limited support.
3) Tunnel Only for Connection to the MU Network (Split Tunneling).
4) The current version of Network Manager does not support importing OpenVPN configuration for split tunneling. Therefore it is necessary to perform the VPN configuration via the command line.
Installation Procedure when Using Faculty VPN Servers
If you need to use one of the faculty VPN servers, download the appropriate configuration file and follow the installation instructions:
- Windows: If you have yet not done so, install OpenVPN (Windows). After installation, right-click the OpenVPN icon and select "Import Configuration File". Then select the downloaded configuration file. Alternatively, you can save the configuration file directly to c:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config (or on the 64b system: c:\Program Files(x86)\OpenVPN\config). This option requires sufficient system authority.
(Note: If the above stated folder is not created, you can find it in c:\Users\UŽIVATEL\OpenVPN\config\) - macOS: Download and install Viscosity., then follow the instructions to import a configuration file downloaded from the table above. Use configuration files for Linux. MU employees and, in justified cases, students can obtain a license for the Viscosity program by sending a request to it@muni.cz.
- GNU/Linux: Use NetworkManager according to the VPN instruction (GNU/Linux), just set the server (gateway) according to the table and use the appropriate connection name. To use in the command line, download the configuration file (available in the above referenced instructions) and save it to /etc/openvpn.
Alternatively, if you are interested in this service, please contact the MU VPN administrator.
