Instructions

How do we work with name registration?

Instructions for writing CD titles, artists and songs; the goal is to capture the exact form of the names from the album cover (we do not change the names!), but supplemented with diacritics and maintaining the principles listed below.

General principles

We follow the rules of French spelling, i.e. we write a space before a colon, semicolon, question mark and exclamation point (not before three periods), add missing accents, use French (bent) apostrophes and French quotation marks. In words like cœur, we write œ as one character. We write capital letters for our own names according to the rules of French spelling.

Main rules

  1. At the beginning of each individual word in the title, we write a capital letter: Si Les Coups Avaient Du Charme; this also applies to additional information in the title: Bonus Track, Interlude.
  2. Each initial capital letter should be written with the appropriate diacritics:

    Merci À La Vie, Écoute !

  3. What to do if an apostrophe (’), hyphen (-) or period (.) appears in the title?
    1. We write a capital letter after them if they are followed by only one letter: J'Étais Comme Eux, L'Algérino, < em class="example">H-V.
    2. We write a small initial letter after them if they follow more than one letter: Don't, Shurik'n, Mc's, Réveillez-vous, Exercice.com.
    3. If several apostrophes or hyphens follow in one word or their combination, we always count the letters from the last apostrophe/hyphen:

      Dans Quoi Qu'j'Avance- before A there is only one letter between two apostrophes, therefore capital;

      Le Futur Que Nous Reserve-t-Il ? – before the I between the two hyphens there is only one letter, therefore capital);

      Qu’est-ce Qui Nous Reste ?- more than one letter before c between apostrophe and hyphen, therefore lowercase.

Special cases or What to do when the title contains…

  1. shorthand? We usually write the abbreviation in capital letters (it is necessary to verify that it is really an abbreviation, e.g. by listening to the song on Youtube): MC (= Master of Ceremony),Freestyle M2M, C'Est O.K.; ale common abbreviations of SINGLE-WORD expressions are written only with a capital letter: No (= number), Mr (= monsieur). Note: Mc's is an abbreviation, but here it is a derivation of an adjective, so the c is small.
  2. question mark (?) whose plus (+)? We write a capital letter: ??Radio??, R’N’B+Blues+Jazz+Funk+Pop+Rock = Hip Hop Music.
  3. bracket? After a parenthesis, a capital letter at the beginning of a word, a small letter in the middle of a word: Sans (Re)pères, J’Rap Pour Les Mino(rités).
  4. artist name? We'll use the unaltered form of the artist's name (i.e. as shown in the first column):CatBurglaz.
  5. numeral? After them a small letter: 2night, 10ème.
  6. roman numerals? We write them in capital letters: IV My People, VII (Sept).

Other notes and recommendations

  1. If there are dots in the name, we keep them: T.R.I.P.T.I.K.
  2. Vol. 1, Vol. 2 (designation of the volume, i.e. the work) is written as follows (with a space after the period).
  3. Hip Hop (Hiphop) we write separately/together according to how it is on the cover.
  4. All rules also apply to names containing English (German,...) words. (Note: if the ENTIRE song has only English lyrics, it doesn't belong in RapCor and needs to be reported.)
  5. If there is a date in the title, I recommend changing the cell format: Format > Number > Plain Text - this will ensure the title doesn't change automatically.
