Catalogue of Research Platforms

Summary of platforms for research and digital collections managed by the Faculty of Arts departments and their partner institutions. The summary is in alphabetical order and it is possible to browse it by the type of platform.

Definition of platform types

Bibliographic databases | metadata

Databases based on bibliographic data or metadata, i.e., data on various types of documents or publications (e.g., monographs, collections, articles, conference papers, patents, etc.). These databases may also contain additional information (e.g., biographical) or provide the full text of documents.

Digital libraries | full text

Information sources that provide access to the full text of text, image or audiovisual documents. They often include additional information (typically metadata of the respective documents) and have advanced content management and search capabilities. They also include digital repositories and digital archives.

Factographic databases

Databases containing information on specific phenomena, objects, facts that may additionally contain other data (e.g. metadata).

Dictionaries and encyclopaedias

Alphabetically, conceptually, systematically, or otherwise arranged sources that present information in terms of language (dictionaries, lexicons) or content (encyclopaedias, encyclopaedical dictionaries) about selected terms, concepts, or objects of knowledge.

Geographic information systems

Complex information systems that represent diverse data in relation to their spatial characteristics, typically in the form of interactive maps with various rendered objects.

Language corpora

Collections of texts or audio recordings of one or more languages, structured and organized in such a way that enables linguistic examination of the language by means of specialized tools; they are also used for creating dictionaries, spell checkers, translators, etc.

Bibliography of Aleš Tichý

A bibliographic database of translations from British literature, no longer developed. The data is now part of the joint project between UK and MU: Database of Czech Literary Translation after 1945. The original database included entries of nearly 3,000 books and more than 1,300 authors and translators.


Cinematic Brno

The documentation of the history of film screening and spectator preferences in Brno in 1918-1945. The database contains information about each cinema, its programme and detailed information about the screened films.


Czech Musical Dictionary of People and Institutions

The Czech Music Dictionary of People and Institutions is a publicly available comprehensive dictionary, which describes the musical culture of the Czech lands in the past and the present. It contains more than 16,000 entries compiled by dozens of experts and new entries are continually added.

The Centre for Music Lexicography manages several other non-public dictionaries for internal research needs. Their list is available on the project website.


Database of Czech Literary Translation after 1945

A joint project between UK and MU provides information on translations and translators. MU participated in the project by adding English-written literatures. The database also includes the no longer developed Bibliography of Aleš Tichý.


Database of Tricky Words in English and Czech

The database of words in English and Czech which sound the same or similar, but have different meanings. Search for a specific word in one of the languages (you can also enter only a part of the word) and display its wrong and correct translations.


DEMOS; in preparation

The system under development will allow users to enter and modify data from serial sources (people registers, land books, etc.) and generate genealogical trees and other data for historical-statistic and demographic research. The project is executed in collaboration with VUT (the leader of the project is Ing. Jaroslav Rozman, Ph.D.).


Dictionary of Czech Philosophers

Text dictionary of Czech and related (born or living in the Czech lands) philosophers and thinkers. It contains biographical information and bibliography, usually selective. The entries can be browsed alphabetically.


Digital Library of Arne Novák

The aim of the project is to make the extensive work of Arne Novák accessible from one place. The collection includes digitized material from the resources of the Central Library (his own monographs, introductions and epilogues) which are freely accessible pursuant to the Copyright Act. It also contains text files with the automatically recognized plain text (with unedited errors).


Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University

It contains freely available full text content of magazines, monographs, collections of works and book editions published at the Faculty of Arts. You can search for authors, names, abstracts and keywords (at the level of individual articles).


Digitized Old Prints

The project is no longer developed. It offers access to twelve selected old prints and free works from the resources of the Central Library of the Faculty of Arts in a digitized form.


DIPLODOK

Catalogue of information about musicological works of any form or type, successfully defended at selected Czech and Slovak universities.


Encyclopaedia of Brno History

Interactive online encyclopaedia used by the general public. It interconnects information from different areas of the Brno history - on people, events, streets and buildings, including photographs. It contains the index of archaeological sites.


Film Culture: Brno 1945–1970

It contains information about the programme of cinemas in Brno in 1945-1970 and accompanying material. It also contains records of each cinema and detailed information about the displayed films. You can find out films screened in a selected cinema, cinemas that featured a selected film, or films screened in a selected year.


Film Culture: Leipzig 1945–1970

It contains information about the programme of cinemas in Leipzig in 1945-1970 and accompanying photographic material. It also contains records of each cinema and displayed films. You can view films screened in a selected cinema, cinemas that featured a selected film, or films displayed in a selected year.


Filmový kurýr – a Bibliographic Database of a Film Journal; in preparation

An upcoming database that will allow full text searching in the annotations of individual texts of the Filmový kurýr journal, searching by the author of the text and by subject headings.


Geographic Information System of Traditional Folk Culture (1750–1900)

The system collects the information on tangible and intangible traditional folk culture in Moravia between 1750 and 1900 from various accessible sources and interconnects them with map documents. You can search maps as well as databases using various parameters.


Herbaria manuscriptoria – a Database of Manuscript Herbaria; in preparation

An upcoming database of medieval herbaria written in Latin or Czech until approx. 1500, which have been preserved in the libraries in the territory of the Czech Republic.


Hermína Týrlová – a Digital Library of Materials; in preparation

The platform under development aims to provide access to digitized materials from the archive of director Hermína Týrlová. It will be available to students and teachers for study and research purposes.


Historical Land Use in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in Primeval Times and Middle Ages

Archaeological and scientific data on the region of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. It provides views of the spatial data by categories and time and contains primary data from research, source data and reference materials. Certified maps, methodologies and investigation techniques as well as exhibition catalogues are available on the project website.


Interactive Map of Geographical Location of Folk Customs in the Czech Republic (IMGEO); non-public

The interactive map of geographical location of folk customs in the Czech Republic is a non-public educational material, which allows ethnology students to analyse the location of individual folk customs in the Czech Republic in a clear and illustrative way.


Irrigation; in preparation

The project deals with the problem of irrigation systems and buildings. One of the forthcoming outputs is a web-based application for the general public, which should popularize the topic of irrigation in the context of climate change.


Kapradí: Library of Czech Translations of Early English Drama

Full-text database of existing Czech translations of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The site enables a parallel display and examination of the translations and provides access to a number of texts elsewhere unpublished, discovered by the project. Some of the texts are not accessible due to copyright restrictions.


Leoš Janáček’s Correspondence

The comprehensive critical edition of Leoš Janáček’s correspondence. Access requires registration. It contains diplomatic transcription of letters, their detailed description and annotations. It also includes digitized copies, which can be viewed in the research room of the Department of the History of Music, Moravian Museum in Brno (partner of the project).


Lithic Projectiles [dataset]; in preparation

The compiled repository provides access to research data from the project Archer’s Role in Vertical Stratification Processes of Central European Societies at the Onset of the Bronze Age. Includes macrophotography, microphotography and 3D model files.


Material from the Neolithic and Eneolithic Periods; in preparation

An interactive learning application, bringing together information and materials related to the periods of Neolithic and Eneolithic in Central Europe. The aim of the project is to make the resulting web application available to the wider professional public as well.


Media Art Live Archive; in preparation

The project explores the potential of using machine learning and deep neural networks in analysing audiovisual works. Its output, in addition to expert neural networks (software), will include a unique Vašulka Live Archive website that will provide users with tools to study the poetry of the video art of Steina and Woody Vašulka. The project is prepared in collaboration with Vašulka Kitchen Brno and The Brno House of Arts.


Melodiarium hymnologicum Bohemiae

A digital catalogue of the repertory of monophonic Latin, Czech, and German sacred song found in sources located in the Czech lands or imported into the Czech lands, from the earliest beginnings until the 18th century. It contains digitized records of resources and text index, enabling you to search in texts and melodies.


Operation and Visitors of Brno Cinemas from the Employees' Point of View

The database presents the results of the oral history project. It contains information about the employees of Brno cinemas in the period of 1930s to 1960s.


PicturaLudere; in preparation

The database of religious images and texts from the Early Middle Ages with advanced search capabilities. The project examines the attitudes of medieval people toward religious images and symbols. The database enables interconnecting the analytical texts from the period with the image material.


Pottery as Cultural Heritage; in preparation

An upcoming database of medieval pottery products with an aesthetic effect, including scientific analyses, photographs and 3D models.


Pottery of the High Middle Ages; in preparation

Připravovaný projekt představí výsledky dosavadního výzkumu vrcholně středověké keramiky z hlediska metodiky jejího post-exkavačního zpracování a dobových výrobních postupů a prostřednictvím putovní výstavy a virtuálního muzea je zpřístupní široké veřejnosti.


RapCor: a Rap Corpus

Corpus of spoken French in rap songs. The web application allows you to search the included sources by songs and albums and display all songs of one author.


Sparling: English or Czenglish

The book written by Don Sparling, digitized with the author’s consent, supplemented by approx. 70 online self-study exercises.


Works of Jan Hus

The database of Hus’s literary work maps Hus’s Latin writings and their preserved manuscripts (dating, incipits, explicits). It provides detailed information on medieval manuscripts and old prints they have been preserved in, their editions, translations and related literature. Works can be searched using various criteria. The database is part of the MIHOO (Magistri Iohannis Hus Opera omnia) project.


Zlín Film Culture (Redazlín); in preparation

The aim of the project is to develop an innovative database, specialized maps and visualization applications that will present the history of the locations, people or institutions associated with the film production and culture of Zlín.
