CIT Newsletter 3/2024: Classroom renovations, e-mail aliases and changes to the network drive

Faculty e-mail aliases - how to convert to the new system

Similar to how we converted mailboxes to M365, we will now convert email aliases. This is due to the planned shutdown of the faculty server on which the aliases have been running until now. We have therefore redesigned the alias creation process, which will, among other things, allow users to have better control over the recipients of common addresses. We describe the details of the new e-mail aliases and the associated processes in a web article. Please pay attention to the article, especially if you have an existing alias, to avoid the risk of losing it. If you are unsure, you can verify the existence of an alias using the tool linked below or in the article.

New CIT service: methodological consultations in teaching with the use of technology

Since September, the e-learning office of CIT FF MU offers consultations focused on working with technology in teaching. You can discuss with the faculty methodologist, for example, how to innovate your teaching, how to activate students or how to get feedback on your current teaching. However, you can also contact us for other issues - in short, if your teaching involves the use of technology, don't be afraid to write to our Faculty Methodologist.

Network drive R has been changed to drive O

During August, the label of disc R was changed to disc O. The change was due to technical changes, but these have no impact other than the change of a letter in the name. Your files from the original disk have been preserved and moved to the new disk (Medium storage O:). If you had a shortcut connected to the repository on your PC, you need to reset its destination path to the new one.

Upgrade of technology in other classrooms

Several other classrooms in the B2 building have been renovated to be adapted for possible hybrid teaching. The improvements are mainly related to microphones, cameras and projectors, which can now better capture the image and voice of students in the classroom so that they can be heard by remotely connected participants. New whiteboards for marker writing and screens on the back wall have also been added so that the teacher can also keep an eye on remotely connected students. In classroom A21, new screens were installed in the middle of the room to allow students sitting in the back of the room to see the presentation better. We are currently testing the entire technology structure, so we ask for your patience and apologize for any complications in the first few weeks of classes. If you have any problems with the technology, please contact us via the form on the website.

Mutual inspiration in teaching

Thinking about how to innovate your teaching? Peer-to-peer inspiration could help you, where you take part in the teaching of a fellow teacher, who in turn will later take part in your teaching. You will get valuable feedback and learn what teaching methods are used by others. The only requirement for joining our program is that it must be a class in which you use technology in any way.

How to distinguish genuine INET emails from the scams?

Since May this year, emails from INET contain a digital signature that allows you to verify the trustworthiness of the sender. At the same time, the sender is named more intuitively in the e-mail inbox - you can always find the messages under the sender "INET MU". For details on how to verify the certificate in your inbox, see the article on the website.

New platform – Herbaria

We would like to invite you to the presentation of the new database Herbaria manuscripta, which scientists from the Faculty of Arts of MU created together with colleagues from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine of MU. The database contains an inventory of all medieval manuscript herbaria that have survived in the Czech Republic. It can be used not only by scientists, for whom it is primarily intended, but also by the general public. The meeting will take place on 17 September 2024 at 16.00 in the meeting room of the Dean's Office; participation is also possible online.

OneDrive capacity reduced to the announced 100 GB

In recent months, we've continually highlighted OneDrive's dwindling storage capacity. Starting Sept. 15, all MU employees have seen their storage capacity changed to 100 GB, while students have 30 GB. If you were exceeding capacity and did not manage to back up your files elsewhere, your data will remain in place, but the storage will be put into read-only mode. Therefore, you will not be able to upload new files or edit existing files until you release the storage. If you need help with backups, you can refer to the workshop recordings we have posted on the website or contact us.

Autumn workshops focused on effective work with MS Office tools

This time we decided to organize workshops on less known applications from the M365 package. Why? These are programs that can greatly simplify the work not only for you but also for the people you work with, so it would be a shame not to know their advantages. You can attend workshops on:

Change of tablet and XR booking app

We have a new app for booking iPads and XR devices. You will now see the inventory in the booking system so you know how many devices we currently have available. At the same time, you will no longer need to click on a pick-up date, but will automatically see the closest available reservation date, and you can choose your pick-up time. The process of returning the equipment will now go through the same system.

History of CIT: FF MU classrooms before and now

The classrooms of our faculty are undergoing continuous renovations - while in the past they were mainly lecture rooms without technology (or later at least with a projector and screen), today the rooms are equipped with a lot of multimedia technologies that, if used properly, can make teaching more interesting and effective. Take a look at the photos showing some of the faculty rooms in the early days, in 2009 and today. In the photos you can see, for example, the library, the old Aula, classroom D21 yesterday and today, and examples of other classrooms.
